Saying Goodbye to Two Dear People Last Week

Last week, two people close to me passed away.

One was the husband of my closest friend, and the other was my father’s younger brother (my uncle from my maternal side).

My friend’s husband suddenly passed away in his sleep from a heart attack, leaving everyone in shock and sorrow.

My uncle had been suffering for a long time from colon cancer and kidney dialysis. After overcoming several critical moments, he eventually passed away due to pneumonia.

The death of my friend’s husband came as a great shock. I visited the funeral home multiple times throughout the service to comfort my friend. She had lost consciousness briefly from the initial shock, and when she arrived at the funeral hall, her eyes looked dazed, which worried me a lot. Fortunately, she endured it well, and by the second day of the funeral, she had become much calmer compared to the previous day.

Then, the day before we were to go to the burial site, I received news of my uncle’s passing. I postponed going to my friend’s husband’s burial and hurried to the funeral hall in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do (Suji), where my uncle’s service was being held.

My father cried a great deal over the death of his youngest sibling. He wept at the funeral hall and again at the burial site. My heart ached deeply as well.

Watching our family members do their utmost to carry out the solemn funeral procedures with dignity filled me with gratitude and respect.

Even on the day of the third-day memorial rite (Samwooje), many family members gathered, and we held a warm ancestral rite to send off the deceased.

 May they rest in peace.
